A newly published dataset found that 45% of patients diagnosed with invasive mold disease (IMD) died within 90 days of diagnosis. IMDs develop when mold enters the body through inhalation or contact with contaminated medical devices or linens — putting clinical environments, equipment reprocessing practices, and supply chain handling directly in the frame as potential vectors.

IMD disproportionately affects immunocompromised patients, including those undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplantation, who have limited ability to fight off fungal infection. Mortality rates at this level make IMD one of the more lethal healthcare-associated infection risks, yet it receives significantly less attention than bacterial HAIs in most infection prevention programs.

For biomeds and HTM teams, the device contamination pathway is the most actionable angle here. Equipment that contacts mucous membranes or is stored in areas with poor environmental controls — including flexible endoscopes, respiratory therapy equipment, and reusable surgical instruments — can serve as transmission vectors if reprocessing or storage protocols break down. The 90-day mortality figure is a useful number to have on hand when making the case internally for rigorous reprocessing standards and environmental monitoring programs.
